Places to See around Penketh

Penketh has many places to see and some beautiful scenic walks following the Pennine way along the banks of the now disused Sankey / St Helens Canal.

Ditchfield Farm is a Large farm close to the Sankey Canal. The Farmhouse of Ditchfield Farm was once Penketh Hall where the Lords of the Manor resided. There are a good few public footpaths running through Ditchfields Farm which provide beautiful walks in the summer to Penketh Marina or if you are in need of some refreshments The Ferry Tavern.

If you fancy a longer walk you can continue along the banks of the Sankey Canal to Cuerdley, past Fidlers Ferry Power Station, or Even to Spike Island in Widnes. Travelling along the footpath in the opposite direction will take you to Liverpool road and continuing further to Bewsey Old Hall and eventually St Helens.

The site of the old Gate Warth Waste Disposal ground has now been made into a nature reserve where many wild birds and plants can be observed, the nature reserve runs all the way down to the banks of the River Mersey, and is now one of the highest points in Penketh.

Penketh has many quaint streets where the history of the village is still not to hidden by progress. The old railway line is still used by Fidlers Ferry Power Station for coal transport.

Just off Chapel Road is Well Lane and Penketh Brook, Well Lane was once the site of Penketh Well. Opposite to Penketh Brook is a large Meadow backing onto Ditchfield's Farm.

Behind Honiton Square is a community Centre, which was once the Friends (Quakers), Meeting House, hence the name of Meetings Lane. The gravestones of some of the old Quaker residents of Penketh can still be found in the grounds of the Meeting House. Unfortunately some of the old landmarks of Penketh, such as the Tannery in Tannery Lane and the old Windmills once in the fields near Stocks Lane (where the Stocks once stood) have now been demolished.

Penketh Cemetery is found at the back of Penketh High School, just off St Marys Road. If you follow this road until you meet Liverpool Road you will find the historic village of Great Sankey. I believe that Great Sankey is the only village in the country to have a cross-roads with a Police Station (Penketh and Great Sankey Police Station), Post Office (Great Sankey Post Office), Church (St Mary's) and Public House (The Chapel House) on each corner of the junction.
